  1. a Bachelor degree with at least Second Class Honours in Social Policy, Social Work, Youth and Community Studies, Psychology, Criminology, Social Wellbeing Studies, Management, Public Administration, Public Policy, Marketing, Banking and Finance or in any other area of study which the Board of Studies, deems to be relevant and
  2. a minimum of two years of practice in an area deemed relevant by the Board of Studies.

This programme adopts an interdisciplinary approach to management in the social care field. It provides a specific, yet holistic, postgraduate qualification in the management of social care services which ֠to this date ֠does not exist on the local market.

It is a learning platform rooted in the social sciences and strategic management. It will adopt a proactive method of learning wherein you are presented with empirical and hypothetical case scenarios involving the administration of social care organisations and institutions, both domestically and abroad. It will equip you to become a future practitioner with a professional skills portfolio that will help you manage, develop and reengineer your organisations and projects. Field placements will help to achieve this objective. The programme will provide innovative insights into managerial, social and economic niches, including the knowledge and skills that are of particular importance to the sector, such as Social Marketing.

As a prospective practitioner, the course will equip you with a professional skills portfolio that will help you manage, develop and reengineer your organisations and projects. Field placements will help to achieve this objective.

The programme will provide innovative insights into managerial, social and economic niches, including the knowledge and skills that are of particular importance to the sector such as Social Marketing and the ability to calculate the return on investment of preventive measures and delivery of social care services. This new knowledge platform will help you to explore the link between the Gross Domestic Product and investment in social care; thus, rendering you as a leader in the social field in a better position to understand the interplay between the economy and social cohesion.

This programme is offered as an interfaculty programme of the Faculty for Social Wellbeing and the Faculty of Economics, Management and Accountancy.

In addition to the compulsory study-units, students are required to choose study-units to the value of 5 ECTS credits from the elective study-units on offer during semester 1.

This programme of study is governed by the General Regulations for University Postgraduate Awards, 2021 and by the Bye-Laws for the award of the Degree of Master of Arts in Management of Social Care Services - M.A. - under the auspices of the Faculty for Social Wellbeing and the Faculty of Economics, Management and Accountancy.

With regards to subject knowledge and understanding, by the end of the programme, you will able to:

  • develop strategic leadership and management skills that complement your knowhow in social care and wellbeing;
  • demonstrate a social care orientation in your managerial duties;
  • take responsibility for decision-making to bring about change and innovation;
  • use people metrics to motivate employees and implement successful performance management schemes;
  • sustain a quality culture of excellence in social care services and institutions; and
  • apply the principles and values of good governance.

In connection to intellectual development, you will be able to:

  • adopt a multidisciplinary approach that is essential for todayҳ and tomorrowҳ leadership and management of social care services and organisations;
  • develop a set of managerial tools and deepened knowhow on social affairs that are considered essential in any socially conscious professional environment;
  • acquire a postgraduate specialisation in the strategic leadership and management of social care services that will continue to add value to your previous undergraduate qualification.

  • In terms of key and/or transferable skills, you will be able to:
  • use empirical case studies during coursework to help you relate theoretical, conceptual and legislative frameworks to a versatile array of real-life situations;
  • plan, execute and evaluate specialised field placements that will provide you with an additional opportunity to apply knowhow in real life situations;
  • aspire for executive positions by acquiring the necessary leadership and managerial rigour;
  • adopt an interdisciplinary approach in the arena of leadership, management and social affairs.

In terms of employability prospects, you will be able to:

  • acquire a highly prized, interfaculty qualification which would be beneficial to state entities as well as to non-governmental organisations and the private sector;
  • get hold of an excellent vehicle for career advancement and diversification for practitioners in social work, management and other related fields.

The programme provides for two exit awards, one at PG Certificate level and the other at a PG Diploma level. The learning outcomes pertaining to each exit award are as follows:

If you opt to exit at the level of Postgraduate Certificate, then you will be able to:

  • apply scientific research methods in order to engage in evidence-based management;

  • perform and lead ethically in an organisational set-up.

If you opt to exit at the level of Postgraduate Diploma, then you will be able to:

  • apply scientific research methods in order to engage in evidence-based management;
  • understand and interpret domestic and international social changes in order to formulate social policies;
  • manage resources and lead change programmes within social care organisations;
  • acquire a solid grounding in good governance;
  • perform and lead ethically in an organisational set-up;
  • manage organisational projects from initiation stage to closure stage;
  • formulate and manage quality control measures in order to evaluate continually the strategies and operations within social care organisations;
  • design and operate a culture of service excellence means in order to establish the most effective and satisfying ways to fulfil the organization's vision and mission;
  • engage in strategic human resource management to enhance flexibility, innovation, performance and knowledge transfer;
  • lead innovation programmes within organisations in order to enrich organisational performance, effectiveness and efficiency;
  • understand and manage standards of practices related to supervision of social work.

If you complete the full programme leading to the Master of Arts in Management of Social Care Services, then you will have acquired all of the learning outcomes pertaining to the Postgraduate Diploma level and, in addition, the ability to research and write a professional portfolio on any theme related to the central notion of managing organisations engaged in social care services.
